What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a specific machining process that operates under the umbrella of CNC machining services. CNC machining refers to a variety of cutting, milling, and turning manufacturing methods effected through the use of computer numerical control (CNC) software and CNC lathe machines. Rather than using manual controls, CNC equipment uses pre-programmed instructions to direct the tools, creating exceptionally accurate, highly repeatable results.

CNC turning uses a cutting or grinding tool to create symmetrical markings on a round or cylindrical rotating workpiece. The tool is mounted on a turret that is directed by CNC software to move against the workpiece at varied depths along one or more axes. The workpiece rotates at a constant speed on a spindle, allowing the tool to remove material to create the desired shape. In addition to milling, engraving, tapping, and threading on the exterior of a component, turning can be used to cut and shape the inside of the workpiece in a process known as boring.

Advantages & Applications of CNC Turning

CNC turning services are a quick and efficient way to produce a variety of components with a high degree of accuracy and repeatability. Mico Machine is pleased to offer quality CNC turning services for shorter lead times, extremely tight tolerances, and high material versatility.

As machining technology continues to advance, equipment manufacturers are incorporating CNC turning parts into a wide range of applications and industries. The method is ideal for use on cylindrical or spherical components that have symmetrical diameters. Common components manufactured using CNC turning services include knobs, flanges, shafts, bushings, pulleys, and bellows.

Selecting the Right CNC Turning Materials

Mico’s state-of-the-art CNC turning capabilities extend to a wide range of materials, including:

  • Metals, including steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and steel alloys
  • Plastics, including polypropylene, acetal, acrylic, and nylon
  • Wood
  • Foam
  • Fiberglass

When selecting the material for your CNC turned part, it is important to consider the material’s overall cost, machinability, and the component’s intended use. Aluminum, for example, is highly durable, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective, but it does not have the tensile strength of certain steel alloys. Steel, on the other hand, is more expensive and harder to machine than aluminum, but is more durable, making it ideal for use in heavy-duty components. Mico Machine’s seasoned experts are available to assist you along every step of the manufacturing process, so you can rest assured that you have the perfect material for your needs.
